Braille signs have raised characters on them so that those with visual impairments can still understand the signs and their valuable messaging. Braille signs are usually used for wayfinding, but they can be used for other purposes as well. Though they are used on ADA signs, they are not the same.

If you’re looking for “braille signs near me”, contact the experienced team at Optimum Signs for more information.

What are Braille Signs?

Braille is a physical, tactile writing system where readers can feel the letters. This system was designed for those who are visually impaired. You do not necessarily have to be completely blind to use braille. Many people with impaired vision still use braille to help them understand, navigate, and communicate.

A braille sign is a visual communication tool that displays a braille translation of the sign’s messaging. This is not as simple as just punching grooves into the sign.  Braille is complex since there are different types of braille that are used, plus you need to ensure that the braille characters are raised enough to be felt reliably. The sign’s location also plays a large factor in the success of the sign to ensure that braille readers can locate the sign easily.

Braille and ADA Signs are Not Synonymous

Many believe that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) mandates braille on signs. While that is true, not all ADA signs need to have braille. Further, not all braille signs are ADA approved. There are many circumstances where you may choose to have braille signs that the ADA wouldn’t mandate you have.

Why Invest in Braille Signs?

You may want to invest in braille signs for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Customer convenience: People with vision impairments will appreciate these signs.
  • Accessibility: Support accessibility and your reputation as an accessible business.
  • Regulations: Meet your obligations to ensure your establishment is safe for all guests.

Different Types of Braille Signs

There are various types of braille signs that will be useful in different circumstances. Braille bathroom signs are the most common signs used; however, you might require braille school signs to teach students or braille hospital signs to direct patients. We can help you design the right sign for your specific circumstances.

Where are Braille signs required?

There are many signs that do not have to be ADA compliant. As well, some signs need to be ADA compliant but don’t necessarily need to have Braille on them. The rules can get specific depending on your situation, but in general, Braille is required on signs that identify the permanent use of a room, such as a bathroom, an office with a room number, an office dedicated to a person, etc.

How do Braille signs work?

Braille signs have Braille characters added to them by raising a portion of the sign’s material. Braille signs are also installed at a specific height so that those with visual impairments or those who are fully blind can reliably find them by feeling for them in the right spot. The reader simply just runs their fingers over the braille characters to decipher the signs messaging.

What are contracted Braille signs?

Contracted Braille is a special form of Braille that is known as grade two Braille. Because Braille takes up more space compared to normal text, contracted Braille was developed to make the Braille smaller and also make it faster to read, which is convenient for signs. These signs will have single characters on them that mean whole words.

What is a Braille contraction?

Typically, in Braille, each letter in a word is spelled out with its own character. However, much like American Sign Language, spelling out words is time consuming. A Braille contraction is a single, smaller symbol that means a whole word, instead of just a letter.

Can Braille be vertical?

Braille is written from left to right. While you can technically place the letters vertically, this can create problems for comprehension. People who read Braille do not expect to find the text written vertically. This can cause misinterpretation of the sign’s messaging. It is best to keep the Braille text placed horizontally on the sign.

What are Braille signs?

Braille signs are signs that have a Braille component on them. Whatever is written on the sign should be reflected in the Braille translation so that people who read Braille are getting the same information as people who do not. Braille signs are often confused with ADA signs. Some ADA signs must have Braille on them; however, you may choose to have Braille signs even when the ADA does not mandate it.

Do ADA Braille signs require a certain kind of font?

Braille signs also have normal written text on them. The ADA does require font guidelines to aid those with some impaired vision. Usually, the ADA requires simple sans serif fonts and disapproves of any script or decorative fonts. This is done simply to ensure clarity. In terms of Braille, the ADA requires grade 2 Braille when used on a piece of ADA signage.

What are the installation options for Braille signs?

Braille signs are mounted to the wall, however, the location where they are mounted is quite important. For example, a braille door sign must be mounted close to the door of the room it is identifying, but in a spot where there are no obstructions. They also must be installed 48 inches to 60 inches off the ground to ensure that people who read Braille can reach the sign to touch it.

What is the standard Braille size?

Braille sizing is about the height of the dots, as well as the size of them and the space between them. Braille dots are supposed to be 0.019 inches high, and the diameter of the dots is 0.057 inches. They are quite small but this is advantageous to fit what you need to on your sign.

Is Braille an ADA requirement?

It can be. The ADA is meant to create accessibility standards for people with all kinds of disabilities, including those with impaired vision. The ADA does often require Braille, however, not all ADA signs must have Braille on them. Here at Optimum Signs we have expertise in creating Braille signs and can advise you as to whether your specific ADA signs require Braille or not.
